Iceland was covered with natural birch wood forests when its first settlers arrived in 930. These newcomers utilized them for ships, houses, and farmstead construction; additionally, any remaining trees were burned for warmth.
Iceland was at an important turning point during this era.
Geysir
Geysir, Iceland’s iconic natural landmark located in Haukadalur’s geothermal region, is one of its most beloved landmarks. Boiling hot springs and geothermal streams create an amazing sight – both the Great Geysir (mostly dormant) and its smaller cousin – the Litli Geysir – regularly release steam into the air, giving visitors something truly spectacular to see!
Strokkur geyser was discovered in 1789 and its regular eruptions make it a favorite with visitors. While other geysers spray out jets of water at you, Strokkur only expels 2.6 quarts per minute – showing just how powerful nature really is! Although its appearance might not seem impressive at first, its regular eruptions stand as testament to this power.
Another highlight of the area is the Geysir Centre, featuring an exhibition and multimedia show about geysers and their history. If you are curious to gain more knowledge about Geysir and geothermal areas in Iceland, this place is well worth checking out.
When it’s time for some fresh air, hiking the area’s paths is an easy and enjoyable way to do just that. All routes are well-marked and easy to follow – whether that means following one of several options available such as the 1.3-mile trek to Geyser’s Steam Vent (with numerous bubbling hot pools and geothermal streams along the way!).
Geysir should be visited between May and September when there is a higher likelihood of clear skies, although winter viewings are possible with appropriate footwear such as crampons.
Geysir and Haukadalur Valley offer much to explore and do nearby, and Uthlid Camping Ground provides camping facilities like cooking facilities, WCs, showers and electricity as well as golf course and swimming pool – ideal bases from which to discover them both! Open from May until September but open year-round; make Uthlid your base when discovering Geysir & Haukadalur Valley.
Gullfoss
Gullfoss waterfall in Iceland is one of its most stunning attractions, boasting two-tiered drops that create gorgeous rainbows on sunny days. Situated along Hvita River that flows from Langjokull glacier, its cascade is driven by gravity’s force to erode rocks at its base and form an impressive canyon.
Gullfoss provides visitors with many activities to enjoy nearby, such as hiking and taking photos of its impressive falls. Visitors may also take part in guided tours through both canyons for an up close view of this breathtaking waterfall.
Glacial runoff during the last Ice Age produced this amazing waterfall on Hvita River. Over time, glacial runoff carved a deep canyon through rock face that led to two cascades, both 11 meters tall with 21-meter drops – creating breathtaking cascades. As Hvita River rushes through narrow canyon, its strong flow creates mist often coated in rainbow colors –
Legend holds that Vikings would hide their treasure in the pool at the bottom of a waterfall to safeguard it against thieves, leading to it sometimes being known as the Golden Waterfall. Another explanation could be because its roaring waters often appear golden-hued.
Gullfoss waterfall is an astounding spectacle year-round, but particularly stunning during summer. Glittering under the sun’s light against its lush backdrop of green moss and flowers, Gullfoss attracts road trippers exploring the Ring Road as they make stops along its route.
Gullfoss has long been an inspiration to artists. The majestic waterfall has appeared in music videos by Live for their song Heaven, while it can also be found throughout Land Ho! (2014) a heartwarming comedy film depicting ex-brothers-in-law on an Iceland road trip seeking to regain their youth. At various points on its itinerary — Jokulsarlon, Geysir, and even Blue Lagoon — its beauty can be seen.
Skaftafell National Park
Skaftafell National Park is one of Iceland’s premier hiking venues, boasting miles of paths that span from an hour stroll to full-day treks. Home to Svartifoss waterfall and Skaftafellsjokull glacier; bordered by Oraefajokull and Skeidarjokull volcanoes; features barren lowland sandurs; high-land slopes abundant with wildflowers; as well as towering mountain peaks; all can be found within its borders!
Skaftafell’s stunning Svartifoss waterfall, composed of geometric black basalt columns that descends in an elegant crescent to meet a tranquil pool below, is sure to be the star attraction on any visit here. Additionally, its nearby Skaftafellsstofa visitor center can provide all sorts of answers about hiking trails and accommodation available nearby.
Skaftafell National Park lies close to the roots of Iceland’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull. Here visitors will experience an environment similar to Switzerland with snow-capped mountains, rivers and an abundance of wildlife reminiscent of Switzerland Alps. Here you can witness outlet glaciers caving down into lowland areas – leaving visitors feeling humbled in comparison to such powerful terrain.
Skaftafell is a favorite tour destination during summer months, however winter offers unique possibilities due to climate differences and changing landscape. Private companies also provide guided glacier hikes during this time that may prove more comfortable than their summertime treks.
The park is open year-round, but the ideal time and season for you to visit depends on what activities and sights you want to see within it. Winter months offer ideal ice cave exploration and glacier hiking conditions while spring and fall offer ideal hiking treks or tent camping conditions.
Skaftafell National Park’s southern section features hotels and cabins for those wishing to spend the night. A camping ground also exists with limited space – for optimal experience it is advised that reservations be made early. Tour operators also offer accommodations at Skaftafell Visitors Centre from where most tours begin.
