1. New England

New England is famous for its vibrant fall foliage displays, featuring vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that transform its region into an enchanted landscape. Peak colors typically appear between late September and mid-October. For optimal viewing, visit New Hampshire or Vermont, as their mountainous regions boast especially eye-catching displays of color.

Your first stop should be the charming New England town of Bar Harbor, Maine. Hike along the Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop for unparalleled views of Bar Harbor’s mountain landscapes in their seasonal hues. Then, spend the night in one of Bar Harbor’s waterfront hotels, like the luxuriously spacious Marlboro Inn!

On Day 2, embark on a memorable drive along the Mohawk Trail, an enchanting byway tracing New Hampshire’s mountainous northern region. Leaves here bloom earlier than other areas, providing an opportunity to witness their most vibrant hues at their most stunning. Along the route are picture-postcard towns and charming covered bridges–don’t miss Shelburne Falls for its Bridge of Flowers–while Northampton makes for an excellent stop if time allows!

Start off your New England fall road trip in style by traveling through New Hampshire’s White Mountains on Kancamagus Highway – it offers breathtaking autumnal colors in White Mountain National Forest! Don’t forget your camera as Hancock Overlook and Sabbaday Falls offer unparalleled panoramic views!

After your drive, stop in Stowe, an unforgettable town boasting picturesque hiking trails and luxurious hotel options. For easy access to these trails from your room, choose either Kancamagus Swift River Inn or Timberholm Inn for the most popular route. Alternatively, try Timberholm Inn for a more classic resort feel.

Your final day in New England autumn road trip should be spent exploring Mount Washington–New England’s highest summit! One of the toughest hikes in America, but definitely worth your while for its breathtaking views. To maximize your visit and avoid crowds on Mount Washington Auto Road, arrive early.

2. The Ozarks

Fall foliage in the Ozarks – a highland region of Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas – creates a vivid kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves turn from green to vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. The region features breathtaking nature coupled with charming small towns offering outdoor activities as well as historical attractions – perfect for scenic drives and autumn hiking adventures to fully experience its breathtaking beauty!

Northeast Arkansas typically sees its foliage season kick off late September or early October, with significant color change occurring by mid-October in central and west-central Arkansas and mid-October in western Arkansas and southern Oklahoma respectively. Peak colors for western Arkansas and southern Oklahoma trees usually occur by end-October.

Branson is an ideal autumn destination for leaf peepers, and multiple tour options showcase its spectacular scenery. Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo provide views of the southern Missouri landscape bathed in warm colors, and nearby Eureka Springs offers scenic woodlands that turn a vibrant array of hues that create both beauty and peace.

The Ozarks are known for their stunning springs, but some of their natural wonders become even more stunning during autumn. Heber Springs’ Collins Creek Trail and Mammoth Spring National Park transform into stunning autumn hues, while in Eureka Springs, tourists can discover more about Mark Twain while taking in beautiful natural surroundings.

Eminence, located along Lake of the Ozarks’ scenic lakefront community is another popular fall tourist destination, boasting picturesque lakefront communities as picturesque as postcards. Eminence’s charming downtown features old buildings with vibrant fall colors lining its streets; dining options abound within this vibrant community! Visitors to Arkansas can hike the Collins Creek Trail, uncover its rich history at Alley Spring Grist Mill Historic Site and the Wild Horse Sanctuary nearby, enjoy canoeing, boating and swimming on Lake Arkansas – and don’t forget a scenic drive along Pig Trail Scenic Byway to admire Arkansas’ colorful autumn foliage! The scenic byway travels through rugged Boston Mountains region of the state containing forests of ash, hickory, and maple trees for the full experience.

3. North Carolina

North Carolina mountains offer spectacular fall color displays for leaf-peepers to enjoy, whether on scenic train rides or strolling through apple orchards. But for truly remarkable autumn displays, head west where state and national parks feature magnificent mountain vistas and cascading waterfalls in abundance.

Beginning mid-September and lasting through November, Tennessee hosts an unforgettable autumn show. You’ll notice first the Smoky Mountains changing their hues, with those at higher elevations turning color in early October before spreading downhill over five to six weeks of color change.

If you want to experience the vibrant hues of fall foliage at their fullest potential, be sure to hike during peak season, when leaves are at their most vibrant. That means making sure you have access to transportation that allows you to reach trails on time. Additionally, staying at a mountain resort or cabin offering scenic views will certainly add another dimension to your experience!

Visits to the Great Smoky Mountains usually involve plenty of hiking. Make the most of your visit by signing up for guided hikes led by park rangers or booking a boat cruise around Lake Norman with GetMyBoat instead – that way, you can focus on appreciating its breathtaking landscape instead of driving and waiting in line for parking spots!

Panthertown Valley’s backcountry, often known as Yosemite of the East, provides an unforgettable leaf-peeping experience. Numerous hiking and walking trails offer amazing mountain views and waterfalls, such as Triple Falls and High Falls hike and Whiteside Mountain trail. These two trails offer one of the state’s most dramatic natural phenomena: bear shadows cast across cliffs on Whiteside Mountain trail.

Green River Adventures’ zipline canopy tours offer another exciting way to view foliage: like flying through a canopy tour! Glide effortlessly between trees, feeling like a bird as you witness the vibrant leaves below from an entirely new perspective.

4. New York

New York is an excellent fall foliage travel destination. The state features one of the longest fall color seasons nationwide, and visitors can see stunning displays everywhere, from city parks to sprawling mountain ranges. Peak colors typically reach their full bloom between late October and early November, so make sure you plan accordingly!

No matter your fall travel goals, New York offers something special. The Catskill Mountains provide an idyllic and quaint escape from NYC. They boast picturesque villages and hiking trails that lead to panoramic views of changing leaves. Peak foliage season in this region occurs between late September and mid-October.

The Adirondacks are another must-visit leaf-peeping destination. Located about four hours’ drive from NYC, they offer everything needed for an autumn escape. Lodging options, restaurants, and events such as the Lake Placid Balloon Festival await in Adirondack Park, while hiking trails provide an exciting experience for active leaf peepers.

If you prefer taking things easy on your autumn foliage trip, the Circle Line’s Shades of Autumn tour offers the ideal way to do just that. A nine-hour round-trip journey, it visits some of New York’s premier foliage spots including stops at Old Forge; this charming village in the Adirondack Mountains boasts some of the brightest orange and red trees around!

Central Park offers stunning autumn scenery all year round, but particularly during this magical season. To help visitors plan their visit more effectively, the park has even created a handy map showing which tree types are at their most beautiful in each section.

Planning a fall foliage trip from NYC can be stressful. Private bus charters from GO Airlink NYC make it easier to arrive on time while taking in all of the sights on your journey.
