A good rule: one country per week, or 2 cities per 5-day trip maximum. More destinations mean more transit time and less actual sightseeing. For 10 days in Europe: 2-3 cities or one country in depth. For 2 weeks: 3-4 cities or 2 countries.
2-3 nights for one city (weekend break): you see the highlights without burnout. 4-5 nights for a capital with day trips (Paris + Versailles, Rome + Pompeii). 7+ nights for a capital plus a regional tour (Spain: Madrid + Andalusia).
Start with 1-2 anchor cities (fly in/out), then pick 1-2 intermediate stops along a logical transit route (no zig-zagging). Budget 1 full day just for travel between each country. Book the first and last nights before leaving; leave the middle flexible if possible.
Staying longer in fewer places — typically 4-7 nights per city vs. 2-3. You get deeper experiences, lower costs (weekly rates, less transit), time for off-hours exploration, and local connections. Particularly suited to Italy, Greek islands, Spain’s Andalusia and Japan’s countryside.
DIY works well for English-speaking and popular destinations (Europe, Japan, US). Travel agents add value for: complex multi-country logistics, luxury tours with special access, bespoke trips for groups, and destinations with visa complexity. A hybrid (DIY flights + agent for land tour) is common.
