Two working class couples take a day trip to Brighton Beach which ends tragically.
Brighton is famous for its music and book shops, but don’t overlook The Lanes – this maze of narrow alleyways captures Brighton’s cool, eclectic spirit perfectly and can easily occupy hours as shoppers discover record and book shops, antique emporiums and coffee shops within its walls.
The Lanes
Brighton’s charming laneways offer visitors an exciting mix of independent shops, boutiques, and inviting cafes that makes the city’s labyrinthine streets an irresistibly charming destination for shopping, boutiques, dining out and entertainment. Once known as fishing port streets are now home to an exciting mix of tea rooms and traditional pubs as well as up-and-coming restaurants and trendy boutiques that make this charming area worth seeing when visiting Brighton.
Dukes Lane is a popular tourist destination, known for its selection of on-trend brands and designer boutiques such as Lola & Deer baby toy shop and vinyl Revolution record store. If sweet treats are your preference, stop by Julien Plumart or Choccywoccydoodah while fashion fans should head towards Flodder’s Lane where Kiehl’s and Fred Perry stores can be found.
For those curious to delve deeper into the area’s past and present, a number of guided walking tours are also available. One such tour, ‘Brighton Lanes and Beyond, provides an informative journey from original fishermen’s cottages to trendy shops today.
As any foodie would know, sampling fresh fish in London would be amiss; one of the best places for seafood in The Grassmarket’s Riddle & Finns offers delectable sharing dishes such as mussels and calamari. Alternatively, The Lanes provides many casual eateries such as That Little Teashop in which visitors can relax with tea and cake!
The Beach
Brighton Beach is a popular summertime vacation spot for residents of New York City due to its close proximity to Coney Island. Additionally, Brighton Beach is known for its high population of Russian-speaking immigrants who populate most storefronts and public buildings there; their names can often be seen both in English and Russian. A fictionalized version can also be found in Hubert Selby’s novel Requiem for a Dream as Hove Beach; additionally featured as such a location in Grand Theft Auto IV as Hove Beach.
Established during the 18th century, Seaside Town attracted wealthy visitors in search of a healthy alternative to London. As its popularity increased during Georgian period, people enjoyed sexual shenanigans, extravagant theatre productions and gambling – including high-profile outsiders such as Prince Regent who helped establish its legacy of pleasure seeking.
As soon as railways were constructed, Brighton became a key commuter centre. But this changed during the 1930s when work to clear away slums in its city center began, leading to its gradual transformation into an attractive retirement town by 1950s.
Brighton has emerged as a retail and commercial center over time, featuring creative industries including digital and new media production. Furthermore, Brighton serves as a center for healthcare and education with numerous hospitals, schools and universities located within its city limits.
Brighton is an engaging and captivating city to visit for all ages, offering plenty of activities for every age and interest group. Families will appreciate its parks and pier while couples can soak up the sights or dine on seafood at one of its fine restaurants. Furthermore, Brighton boasts an incredible range of shops to browse – The Lanes being an example. This maze of small stores reflects the original layout of an ancient fishing village once located here and provides shoppers with unique finds such as gold jewellery, authentic furs, or Guillermo Forchino figurines!
The Pier
Brighton Palace Pier is a 525-metre-long traditional pleasure pier offering various rides and carnival-style food stalls. Featuring a central bandstand, weather screens spanning its entire length, steamer landing stages, as well as steamer landing stages; it attracts over four million visitors annually making it England’s most visited free attraction outside London. Furthermore, Brighton Palace Pier has featured in various works of popular culture such as Brighton Rock (a gangster thriller), Carry On at Your Convenience (comedy), Quadrophenia (a concept album/film by The Who).
Martyn Ware, former Human League member and currently chairperson, participated in a project at the pier that recorded sounds of people and machines on the pier in order to create a 3D model of its entirety.
Attractions at the pier include two large arcades filled with every type of arcade game available today. There are also restaurants and bars here as well as your typical seaside fare like fish and chips.
Brighton Pier has seen many trials throughout its long and chequered history. After narrowly escaping being destroyed by fire in 1905, it was rebuilt using lottery monies after World War II bombing raids damaged it further. A terrorist bomb attack from 1994 was defused using a controlled explosion.
An article published in 2015 strongly criticized the management of the pier for over-reliance on fairground rides, and called on owners to collaborate with local council to bring about improvements at the pier. Meanwhile, in May 2015 a young lady was injured when her leg went through the decking of Pavilion when one of its slats collapsed – she was taken to hospital but didn’t suffer any broken bones, only nerve damage.

The i360 Viewing Tower
Imagine looking out at an idyllic view of both sea and city rooftops at once; even London’s tallest skyscrapers cannot compare! Relax into our glass viewing pod for an unobstructed bird’s-eye view of Brighton at any time of day; from sunset vistas over Eastbourne Pier, all the way up until sunrise over Brighton beach itself!
Marks Barfield, architects behind London Eye, created Brighton’s i360 observation tower and moving platform as an observation tower and moving platform. Comprised of a steel pole covered in perforated aluminium sheeting from which 200 people at once can ascend into its giant glass doughnut-shaped pod to the summit, its construction began in 2008.
It stands out on Brighton-Hove seafronts like an eyesore; no one can miss its presence. According to its architects, it will attract more tourists and longer stays to both areas while acting as a catalyst for regeneration of what was once rundown seafronts.
The pod is heated and air conditioned for optimal comfort in any season, while friendly staff welcome passengers, point out notable sights, answer queries, and provide assistance as necessary. Plus, its Sky Bar serves up Nyetimber sparkling wine along with other Sussex-produced beverages!
The i360 places passenger safety as its top priority and employs a fully trained team responsible for conducting daily inspections and safety checks. I am concerned, however, about its website which only mentions “a range of safety equipment is available”, without providing more specific details regarding these pieces and how they would deal with various emergency scenarios.
