Anecdotes are an invaluable asset to travel writers; they allow readers to enter the story quickly and immerse themselves immediately in its experience. Furthermore, anecdotes offer readers a sense of scale while creating an even richer narrative.
Our group of internationally-minded authors, chefs, and landscape photographers was asked to share their most unforgettable travel experiences – here’s what they had to say.
1. Taking a Ride on a Ferry
Experienced or not, taking a ferry ride can be an unforgettable journey. Not only is it an effective means of travel but it’s also fun seeing all of the different people that use it and witness breathtaking water views, but there is so much more you can do on board than just sit. From shopping and eating to swimming or just lounging around you’ll never get bored on this voyage!
2. Taking a Ride on a Train
Train travel is an incredible way to explore America, providing unparalleled views of its landscape that you won’t get from taking a bus trip. From sprawling natural splendor like New River Gorge routes and remote Rocky Mountains on California Zephyr stretches, there’s so much beauty out there for you to explore on rail travel!
Not like on an airplane, trains provide more freedom of movement compared to planes – explore each car as much as desired depending on which train it is; visit observation cars for breathtaking panoramic views of passing scenery or indulge in delicious chef-prepared cuisine in a dining car!
Train travel offers another exciting aspect: meeting fellow passengers. In particular, train passengers tend to be outgoing and friendly compared to other forms of transport, making conversation easy and making connections easily – sometimes leading to lasting friendships along the journey!
4. Taking a Ride on a Boat
Have you ever experienced life onboard a sailing boat? It is more than a trip from point A to B; it is an adventure! But the question arises of what constitutes such an experience when just sitting onboard while someone else drives? Zoom brought together a group of internationally-minded writers, architects, chefs and landscape photographers for discussion of this question.
5. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
One of the best ways to give your family an unforgettable travel experience is to take them on an airplane ride. A first flight in a small plane allows passengers to enjoy breathtaking views from above while new sensations range from scary to exhilarating – especially for young passengers! An accommodating pilot will likely have passengers that ask for more rides, which also helps when weather forecasting becomes less reliable (ie: it can help manage expectations better!).
Late last month, an expert panel comprised of writers Pico Iyer and Aatish Taseer, chef David Zilber, architect Victoria Sambunaris and landscape photographer Victoria Jones came together via Zoom to debate what are considered essential travel experiences and ultimately come up with 25. Here are a few that made their list:
6. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
As a pilot, taking family and friends on an airplane ride can be an exciting experience – but first-time passengers often bring expectations with them that can potentially make for an unpleasant moment. By considering those expectations ahead of time and adapting accordingly, an otherwise stressful moment can become one that leaves all involved feeling satisfied and content with each momentous trip.
Similarly, if the weather allows you to fly alone but falls below family’s comfort levels, keep the ride short. Also avoid interupting passengers during preflight checks; doing so may make them feel that their safety is being put second to something they don’t understand.
7. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
Flight can be both exhilarating and frightening for first-timers. An important rule of pilothood is being very conservative with weather conditions – if an airplane feels uncomfortable to you, chances are it’s uncomfortable for passengers as well, and you don’t want them experiencing such discomfort during their trip with you.
Prior to embarking, passengers should receive a comprehensive preflight. Interruption of a pilot during his or her preflight time would not be appropriate and will appreciate that their comfort was taken into consideration before being in an airplane. This might involve running weight and balance calculations or asking tactfully about someone’s weight (if required). All part of creating an amazing flying experience!
8. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
An initial flight on a small airplane can be full of unfamiliar sensations that may range from terrifying to thrilling; your goal should be to return them home safely and quickly so they can start to realize it wasn’t so bad after all.
Commentators in the Lounge believe the key to an enjoyable ride is taking into account passenger comfort in every aspect of flight. This includes being conservative when considering weather – if temperatures fall below what would be comfortable for family members, postpone or cancel the trip altogether; taking time to ensure aircraft is in proper working condition; not interrupting pilot during preflight which could prove an unpleasant surprise; and finally not interrupting them during preflight since this can turn passengers off completely.
9. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
As a pilot, your goal should be to ensure an enjoyable journey for passengers. They’ll experience everything from wonderful to terrifying sensations on board; and the more they enjoy it, the more likely they are to travel again. Input from Lounge participants revealed the significance of respecting passengers’ comfort during preflight – not interrupting them with questions! They trust you with keeping their airplane secure.
Be extremely cautious of weather when planning a flight. If conditions fall below your comfort threshold, postpone or cancel the trip to avoid making passengers jealous that someone else got to fly on such an amazing plane for free.
10. Taking a Ride on a Plane with a Pilot
An initial flight in an aircraft can be an exhilarating experience. Depending on an individual’s wiring, these sensations could range from frightening to sublime; to ensure an enjoyable flight experience for all concerned parties involved, respecting individual comfort thresholds during preflight preparation and during flight is of key importance – this includes not interfering during preflight preparation or handling aggressively while in flight and carefully considering weather forecasts before deciding to fly.
One of the best things a pilot can do to protect passengers is be extra conservative with weather decisions. If it exceeds passenger comfort threshold, then there’s no sense risking their safety by flying anyway – your passengers will appreciate your consideration, while it could result in them asking you for rides more often than before!
