Brighton has long been one of Britain’s go-to spots for an uninhibited weekend getaway, combining coastal relaxation and sustainability. Just stroll along its beaches to find ghost piers, vintage carousels and even kitsch candy floss stands.
At its heart lies an impressive LGBTQI community mingled with creatives and other individuals not interested in traditional 9-5 work. Their passions helped support small-scale marvels such as queer culture pub theatre performances and Europe’s first re-used waste building.
The Lanes
The Lanes is an enthralling maze of antique, jewellery, boutique fashion and design shops tucked between historical Brighton pubs and bars that make up this historic district. Additionally, The Lanes features some incredible restaurants including Japanese, Caribbean-influenced French as well as quirky cafes that provide plenty of delicious options.
One of the best things to do in The Lanes is window shopping – many stores are independently owned, providing a special shopping experience. At Baroque Bespoke Jewellery you can browse vintage wooden cabinets displaying custom pieces crafted by local designers; Our Daily Edit offers fashionable items including illustrated T-shirts and violet silk slips; or you could visit Papillon Living, an interior and home emporium in a former post office.

The Lanes offers an abundance of restaurants to choose from, but several stand out. Mange Tout in North Laine is known as an excellent breakfast and coffee spot while Riddle & Finns serves delicious locally sourced seafood dishes.
Petit Pois, a classic French bistro, offers contemporary dishes using only premium-quality ingredients from their exquisite wine list and first-rate service – making this restaurant one of the best restaurants to visit in The Lanes.
If you’re in the mood for a drink, The Lanes offers many pubs to satisfy your thirst. Local attractions like Brighton Wheel, Old Steine Gardens and Royal Pavilion are only moments away from these drinking establishments.
The Lanes offer various car parks for visitors. The Brighton Wheel car park, in particular, provides numerous parking options with convenient shuttle service to both Brighton Dome and main train station.
London Road
London Road may not be well-known outside Brighton, but it boasts its own distinct personality. Home to a large student population and an unusually dense concentration of charity shops; London Road also hosts the highest number of restaurants in Brighton while experiencing rapid gentrification – often being referred to by locals as Brighton’s Shoreditch district.
One of the most significant developments will be a pedestrian route linking Brighton Station’s rear entrance with London Road and The Level, including retail and residential space redeveloped from a former Co-op department store at its corner with London Road; this project will preserve its 1930s facade while providing new housing and commercial space.
Other projects underway will transform London Road and its surroundings, including a public plaza, hotel, office block and cinema/cafe in the former Brighton & Hove Bus Depot building that once housed the Brighton Hippodrome. These include plans to reopen it as a theatre/arts venue as well as plans to repurpose the building as a cinema/cafe complex.
Brighton Loop bus route serves the area, while there are two Southern railway stations at London Road and Kemp Town that provide direct links with London.
London Road serves as the starting point of an exploratory walk that takes in some lesser-known corners of Brighton. The walk begins at Duke of York’s Picturehouse, an independent cinema opened in 1910 that remains the oldest surviving purpose-built movie theater in the UK; additionally it houses Prohibition-era cocktails as well as cozy pub with peaceful candlelight atmospheres.
London Road area is home to various groups and organisations working hard to enhance its image and environment, including the London Road Town Team – made up of residents and business owners that meets regularly to discuss local issues – as well as Portas Pilot Scheme, awarded to Brighton-London Road in summer 2012. Furthermore, LAT collaborates closely with planners and developers in order to secure long-lasting improvements for the area.
Brighton Market
Brighton Market is a producer-only market that connects consumers directly with farmers who produce food in an eco-friendly way. Since 2008 and founded as part of the Town’s Color Brighton Green initiative for environmental sustainability, the Brighton Farmer’s Market provides access to fresh produce, local meats, cheese, eggs, bread pastries and other locally made goods at reasonable prices – while providing families an opportunity to socialize and meet fellow members of their community.
Brookside Recreation Center has hosted the market as its temporary location, but there have been concerns raised regarding space availability. Therefore, they have begun searching for an ideal permanent home that provides more room as well as convenient hours and dates that meet busy lifestyles.
Brighton is well known for its exceptional public school system, but the city also boasts an exceptional community market – The Brighton Open Market.
